Towards Inclusive Social Protection

The UNPRPD ILO-UNICEF Towards Inclusive Social Protection to Advance the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Project centred around three core outcomes: to provide access to adequate information on the development and reform towards inclusive social protection systems and programmes that promote the social inclusion and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities; to strengthen Global, Regional, and national OPD capacity for meaningful engagement in social protection policy reform processes; and, to promote greater coordination among development agencies to support countries in demand of technical assistance to reform or develop inclusive social protection programmes and systems for persons with disabilities.

Our teams evaluation found that the project has proved instrumental in starting a paradigm shift in the way disability is approached within the social protection sector. Messaging this project has promoted around changing the narrative of social protection from incapacity to empowerment; of highlighting the extra costs of living life as a disabled person; and that it’s about inclusion not institutionalisation is raising the visibility of inclusive social protection. The project has amplified a growing momentum around disability inclusive social protection and shows the potential to influence transformational changes in how social protection is implemented.
